Araghchi: Agreement Near, Only Needs Political Will and Fairness
WANA (May 03) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi has stated that a credible and sustainable agreement is within reach, emphasizing that all it requires is firm political will and a fair approach.
In a post on the social media platform X, Araghchi responded to recent remarks by some U.S. officials as well as claims made in certain Western media outlets regarding the content of indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
He wrote: “I generally refrain from airing arguments on key negotiation elements through the media. What I will say is that repeating falsehoods will not change basic facts.”
He added: “As a founding signatory to the NPT, Iran has every right to possess the full nuclear fuel cycle. Moreover, there are several NPT members that enrich uranium while wholly rejecting nuclear weapons.”
“Apart from Iran, this club includes several Asian, European, and South American nations. Maximalist positioning and incendiary rhetoric achieve nothing except eroding the chances of success. A credible and durable agreement is within reach. All it takes is firm political will and a fair attitude,” he emphasized.
Reacting to Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi’s emphasis on Iran’s right to possess a full nuclear fuel cycle, Russia’s representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated: “The Iranian Foreign Minister is absolutely right.”
Mikhail Ulyanov added that he prefers not to comment on details at this sensitive stage of negotiations, but stressed: “According to the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty), member states not only have certain fundamental obligations, but also enjoy fundamental rights that cannot be questioned.”
The first round of these indirect negotiations between Iran and the U.S., mediated by Oman, was held on April 12 in Muscat, and the second round of talks took place in Rome on Saturday, April 19, again with Oman as the intermediary. The third round of talks was also in Oman and took place on Saturday, April 26.
The 4th round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 3, in Rome, has been postponed, and the delay was proposed by Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi. A new date for the talks will be announced in due course, according to officials.
